Does anyone know what is happening here:

This message means that the remote part disconnected the connection before the reply could be sent.
If this happens at the end of the mail transfer this is nothing to worry about.

I was thinking it may be an attempted intrusion or spammers at work.

That's also a possibility.
Note that you can enable password protection or IP filtering.
